The Independent Living Services Program provides comprehensive independent living for individuals with significant disabilities to enable these individuals to become self-sufficient in the home and community.  Services are provided consistent with the client’s choices in the formulation of an Independent Living Plan.  Through life skills training, activities of daily living, counseling and advocacy, in addition to regular vocational rehabilitation services, individuals with significant disabilities are able to maximize their integration and full inclusion in society.

To be eligible for services the following criteria must be met:
  • There must be presence of a significant disability;
  • There must be presence of a significant limitation in the ability to function independent in the family and/or community or to engage in employment; and
  • An individual must require independent living service to develop or maintain the ability to function independently in the family and/or community.

Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Who Are Blind

The Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Who Are Blind serves individuals age 55 or older who have a significant visual impairment that makes competitive employment extremely difficult to attain but for whom independent living goals are feasible.

This program is contracted out to the District of Columbia Center for Independent Living.
